Paralysis Injury Compensation

Paralysis refers to the inability to control movement or to detect sensations such as touch and temperature. Generally people that are paralysed have suffered a spinal cord injury.

Paralysis can mean the loss of two or all four limbs, the loss of use to one or both sides of your body and can be permanent or temporary. The ability to move your fingers, arms, legs or toes may be affected. In more serious cases damage to the vertebrae may cause loss of movement from the neck down or an injury to the lower spinal cord could result in paraplegia. If paralysis was caused by someone else's negligence you may be able to make a claim for paralysis compensation.

What is my claim worth?

There are generally 3 brackets for this sort of compensation:

  • Tetraplegia
  • Paraplegia
  • Shorter Durations of Paralysis

Tetraplegia- also known as quadriplegia is where the injured person is not in any physical pain, has full awareness of their disability, retained the powers of speech, sight and hearing but needs help with bodily functions. Compensation in this bracket can range from £246,750 to £307,000.

Paraplegia- Compensation for this can range from £166,500 to £216,000. The level of the award will be affected by following:

  • The presence and extent of pain
  • The degree of independence
  • Depression
  • Age and life expectancy

Shorter Durations of Paralysis- Compensation here can range from £37,500- £41,250. In cases where death occurs for unrelated reasons within a short period of the accident a lower sum will be awarded. For example if a young adult suffering with paraplegia where death occurs within around 2 years an award of around £37,500 is appropriate.
