Thomas Cook pays out

A woman has won compensation after falling seriously ill while on holiday in Mexico.  27-year-old Natalie Daymond had been on holiday at the Barcelo Costa Hotel, near Cancun, when an E.coli outbreak swept through the luxury resort. Ms Daymond still suffers with gastric problems as a result of the illness.

With high expectations of the luxury resort that she had booked to stay in with her boyfriend, Ms Daymond said that they arrived to find dirty bedsheets, an unclean bedroom, uncooked chicken in the restaurant and re-used foods at mealtimes.  After falling seriously ill at the hotel, she suffered with severe sickness and diarrhoea, which led to her being hospitalised. She remained in hospital hooked up to emergency machines for four days.

Essential that health guidelines are followed by hotels

As a result, a three-day trial was to begin at the County Court in Birmingham last month, yet the travel company Thomas Cook agreed to pay Ms Daymond compensation before the trial began. She did not disclose how much compensation was received.

Ms Daymond’s lawyer said: “It is essential that food hygiene and health guidelines are followed by hotels to keep their guests safe. Tour operators have a duty to ensure the hotels they work with are up to standard.”

Thomas Cook made a formal apology to Ms Daymond and ensured future guests at the hotel that they would enjoy the top quality experience expected from Thomas Cook.
