New York taxi driver, Mohammed Fasyal Himon, has launched a medical fund after his taxi crashed into a British tourist, Sian Green (24), which severely severed her leg.  Ms Green, from Leicester, has had to have her left leg amputated below the knee following the incident, and is currently trying to regain the use of her right leg. 

Taxi driver Mohammed Fasyal Himon said he was “very sorry” for causing the accident, but blames a cyclist for having to swerve onto the kerb.  The accident took place in Manhattan last Tuesday, which Police are currently investigating as neither the taxi driver or cyclist has yet been charged.

“It is just an accident”

Mr Himon claimed that the cyclist had banged his hand on his taxi and had yelled at him, causing him to swerve onto the pavement.  He said: “I am praying for her and her family. But it is not my fault. It is just an accident.”  Mr Himon has launched a fund for Ms Green, alongside the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, to help repay her and her family for the damage caused.

Ms Green is currently recovering from the accident at Bellevue Hospital.  A senior trauma surgeon at the hospital, Dr Spiros Frangos, said that it would have been impossible to replant her left leg, given its condition after the accident.  Her right leg is “likely” to regain its former strength, but it had “sustained multiple deep lacerations”.

He added: “Ms Green has remained optimistic despite the difficult circumstances and is very fortunate to have such a loving and supportive family”.
