Recent statistics released by the NHS’s litigation authority, NHS Resolution, have revealed the shocking errors made by various NHS authorities which have resulted in 137 men losing a testicle within the past six years.
The figures also reveal that around £2.8 million in compensation has been awarded for the devastating mistakes, which works out at around £20,000 per individual. The data also reveals cases including a man who had to have a testicle removed after he noticed it had become gangrenous following an incorrect torsion treatment, and another who mistakenly had his healthy testicle removed, rather than the cancerous one that had been scheduled for removal.
Whilst all medical mistakes are unacceptable and sometimes potentially life-threatening, the blunders highlighted in the report can be particularly devastating if the man involved is young, perhaps not yet in a full time relationship and now worried about his fertility and ability to have a family.
