A Southport man has been jailed for two years and banned from driving for two years for causing the death of Lancashire man, Andrew Birch, in January of last year. Mr Birch, 46, from Scarisbrick was the passenger in a Peugeot Horizon being driven by his 80-year-old mother. 58-year-old Kenneth Grisedale admitted causing the death of Mr Birch, and the serious injury of two other people, by driving dangerously in his BMW.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that Grisedale dangerously overtook the Peugeot on the evening of 6 January 2015 on Southport Road. He then sped off in the direction of Southport. His manoeuvre caused an oncoming Toyota Carina to swerve into the path of the Peugeot, causing the two to collide. Mr Birch lost his life and his mother, together with the 41-year-old female driver of the Toyota, both sustained serious injuries.
Speaking on behalf of Lancashire Police, Detective Sergeant Keith Rimmer stated that he was in no doubt that “the reckless actions of Kenneth Grisedale” had resulted in the untimely death of Mr Birch “in tragic circumstances”. He stated in court: “I hope today’s sentence sends out a clear message to anyone who carries out dangerous manoeuvres and takes risks on the roads. Such behaviour can cost lives and cause devastation to the families of those involved”.
