Recent analysis of over 10 years’ worth of statistics from the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed that the construction industry is the most dangerous to work in. As well as having the highest number of fatalities, people working in construction are also more likely to be injured and subsequently require legal help should they need to claim for compensation.
The HSE data for the whole of the UK shows that since 2008, out of a total of 1267 workplace fatalities, 382 occurred in the construction and building industry. The statistics also show that proportionately, Scotland suffers from the highest number of workplace deaths (176) and throughout the England, Scotland and Wales, the average age for a construction industry fatality is 48. The next two most dangerous industry categories to work in during this period were the service industry with 287 deaths and the agricultural industry with 269.
These statistics show that despite the big advances made in workplace health and safety and the overall awareness of how important health and safety issues are, there are still a significant number of UK workplace deaths each year and that ongoing measures to continually improve the safety of all workers should be welcomed.
